Celosia argentea

Celosia argentea is a tender herbaceous annual or short-lived perennial renowned for its vivid, plume-like or crested flower heads. It is widely cultivated globally as an ornamental garden plant and is also grown as a nutritious leafy vegetable in several tropical regions.

It is of tropical origin, likely native to Africa or Asia, and is now widely naturalized across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. While cultivated globally, it is considered a troublesome agricultural weed in parts of India and China.

It is highly valued as an ornamental plant for its bright, long-lasting flowers and is used in Africa to help control the parasitic Striga weed. Additionally, the leaves and young shoots are widely cultivated and consumed as a boiled leafy green, particularly in West Africa and Southeast Asia.

In traditional folk medicine, preparations made from the leaves, roots, or seeds are historically used to treat ailments such as diarrhea, dysentery, and eye inflammation.
