Dactylorhiza fuchsii

Dactylorhiza fuchsii, commonly known as the common spotted orchid, is a herbaceous perennial characterized by its dense spike of spotted pale purple or white flowers and narrow, often dark-spotted leaves. It is one of the most widespread and abundant wild orchids in its range, exhibiting high variability in flower morphology and scent.

This Eurosiberian species is native to a vast area extending from Ireland and western Europe eastward through Russia to Siberia, Mongolia, and Xinjiang. It thrives in diverse habitats, including forests, moderately wet meadows, bogs, and alpine ecosystems up to 2300 meters in elevation.

It holds significant ecological value as a nectar source for pollinators such as bumblebees and day-flying moths, and forms essential mycorrhizal associations with soil fungi. It is also noted as a successful pioneer species for colonizing disturbed wastelands.

The tubers of this and closely related orchid species have historically been harvested to produce salep, a starchy powder used in traditional folk medicine as a soothing demulcent and nutritive tonic.

The genus name translates to 'finger root' due to the shape of its paired tubers, which historically led to associations with fertility and aphrodisiac properties under the European Doctrine of Signatures.
