Lotus pedunculatus

Lotus pedunculatus, commonly known as big trefoil or greater bird's-foot-trefoil, is a herbaceous perennial in the pea family. It is characterized by its hollow stems, golden-yellow flowers arranged in umbels, and reflexed sepal tips that form a green star on the buds.

It is native to Europe, where it thrives in damp, neutral, open habitats such as fen-meadows. It has been introduced to other regions, including the western United States and Hawaii, where it often grows as a weed in irrigated lawns and disturbed wet areas.

It is utilized as a forage crop for livestock and acts as a nitrogen-fixing plant in agricultural systems. Ecologically, it serves as an important host plant for the oviposition of the wood white butterfly.
