Prunus avium

(L.) L.
Wild Cherry · Gean · Sweet Cherry · Bird Cherry · Gean Cherry

Summary

Prunus avium, commonly known as wild cherry or sweet cherry, is a deciduous tree in the rose family prized for its spring blossoms and edible fruit. It is the primary wild ancestor of most cultivated sweet cherry varieties. While the ripe fruit is safe to eat, all other parts of the plant contain toxic cyanogenic glycosides.

Region

It is native to Europe, Anatolia, the Maghreb, and Western Asia, with a range extending from the British Isles to the Caucasus. The species has been widely cultivated globally and is naturalized in regions like North America, Australia, and New Zealand.

Uses: beneficial

The ripe fruits are consumed fresh or used in various culinary applications, and the tree is widely planted as an ornamental and as a rootstock for commercial cherry cultivars. The timber is also highly valued in woodworking for its fine grain and attractive reddish-brown color.

Uses: medicinal (traditional)

In traditional European folk medicine, infusions of the bark, leaves, or fruit stalks were historically used as an astringent, a cough suppressant, or a mild sedative.

Uses: artisanal

The wood is prized by woodworkers for cabinetry, furniture making, and woodturning due to its smooth texture and rich color. The tree also exudes a natural gum from bark wounds that has been historically collected for use as an adhesive or varnish.

Mythology and culture

In various European folk traditions, the cherry tree is associated with love, fertility, and midsummer celebrations. It was sometimes believed to harbor protective spirits or to ward off evil when branches were placed near homes.
Recorded in: Celtic, Germanic, Slavic
